You are in: Polignano a Mare > Chiesa di Sant'Antonio
Built towards the end of the 1500’s in the square of the same name, it was dedicated to St. Mary of Constantinople. The church had long been part of the larger complex of the convent of the Friars Minor, of which there remains almost intact the structure with the characteristic cloister, now the local "Accident and Emergency department".
The building in front, and even within it, has a severe and simple linear with Romanesque reminiscences. Subject of repeated remodeling, the front was subsequently enriched by beautiful Gothic carved glass representing St. Anthony with Lily.
The interior space is divided into three aisles by massive stone pillars, and the majesty, which fascinates those who enter, culminates in the apse adorned by wooden choir of 1768.
